You have a sense of adventure, want to explore the dirt and get a little closer nature. Then join me on this new monthly gravel ride. Suitable for bikes with tyre widths 30mm or greater. Hybrids, gravel or mountain bikes will be able to negotiate the mixed terrain more comfortably and safely. Not ride bikes.
Starting at Council offices we warm up on some sealed shared paths to Hawkstowe Park. After a lap around the gravel trails in the Morang Wetlands checking out the kangaroos and birdlife we do some easy bumpy mtb tracks along the grassy fields of the Carome track through the Plenty Gorge to reach the Yan Yean Reservoir. A bit of hike a bike over a fence railing is required in this section.
We will ride on-road a little up Arthurs Creek Rd and turn into Ridge Rd which will take us to the back of Whittlesea. Now time for some great views and a few rolls (climbs) as we circumnavigate the reservoir on the gravel. Quality varies from smooth and hard packed to some tricky loose patches. Expect some descents to be rutted and bumpy. Hence it’s expected that you will ride safely within your ability. This is a social no drop ride so we will happily wait for everyone as we manoeuvre through these more tricky sections.
